The Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) and the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) jointly organized a seminar on “Right to Protein” at Dhaka Regency Hotel, focusing on the urgent need for protein awareness in Bangladesh.
The event was attended by nutritionists, doctors, academics, teachers, imams, students, and industry leaders. In his opening remarks, WPSA-BB President Moshiur Rahman said poultry is the most accessible protein source and stressed the role of teachers, religious leaders, and media in spreading awareness about nutrition. In a recorded address, USSEC’s Regional Corporate Affairs Head, Ms. Deeba Giannoulis, highlighted the U.S. commitment to sustainable soybean production through the Soy Sustainability Assurance Protocol, aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Evercare Hospital’s Chief Dietitian, Tamanna Chowdhury, urged families to include eggs, chicken, or fish in daily meals, dismissing misconceptions about cholesterol in eggs. Prof. Dr. Khaleda Islam of Dhaka University described Bangladesh’s “protein paradox,” noting sufficient production but low intake. Cardiologist Dr. A.Z.M. Ahsan Ullah warned of stunting, anemia, and poor immunity resulting from protein deficiency. In his closing remarks, BPICC President Shamsul Arefin Khaled termed the initiative a “national nutrition movement”, calling for schools and mosques to become centers of awareness. Speakers also stressed the role of teachers and imams, suggesting that classroom lessons and Friday sermons can be powerful tools for spreading protein awareness nationwide. The seminar concluded with a consensus that engaging educators and religious leaders could significantly help reduce child malnutrition in Bangladesh. |
