| The First National Convention on Genetics, Plant Breeding & Seed Science has officially commenced in Nepal, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen crop improvement and seed system innovation. The three-day convention is being jointly organized by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Society of Nepal (PBagSoN) and the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC) from 20–22 January 2026 at the NTNC Auditorium Hall, Khumaltar, Lalitpur.
The inaugural session was chaired by Dr Krishna Timsina, Executive Director of NARC, while the event was graced by the Honorable Minister of Agricultural and Livestock Development, Dr Madan Pariyar, as the Chief Guest. In his address, the minister emphasized the critical role of scientific research, innovation, and policy coherence in ensuring sustainable agricultural growth and food security in Nepal. This landmark convention is dedicated to shaping the future of Nepal’s agriculture through scientific collaboration and evidence-based policy dialogue, bringing research closer to practical implementation. The event focuses on the GAS-3B framework—Genetics, Agrobiodiversity, Seed Science, Breeding, Biotechnology, and Biostatistics, addressing key national challenges such as low crop productivity, limited access to quality seeds, climate change vulnerability, and gaps in technology adoption. The convention features a comprehensive program comprising seven thematic sessions, covering genetics and agrobiodiversity, plant breeding, seed science, biotechnology, biostatistics, and policy-related discussions. More than 200 participants, including scientists, researchers, academicians, policymakers, students, and industry representatives, are taking part in the event.
Organizers noted that the convention aims to foster collaboration among stakeholders, share scientific breakthroughs, and generate actionable recommendations to support Nepal’s agricultural advancement. As the convention progresses, it is expected to produce key take-home messages that will contribute to strengthening national research capacity and improving the resilience and productivity of Nepal’s farming systems. The organizers extended their best wishes to all participants for an insightful and productive convention and expressed optimism that the outcomes will help drive Nepal’s agricultural sector forward. |
