| Kochi, India: The 3rd edition of the India Tilapia Summit 2026 was successfully organized in Kochi by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), bringing together policymakers, scientists, aquaculture entrepreneurs, and progressive farmers from across the country. The summit focused on the growth prospects of Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT), emphasizing export-oriented production and value addition opportunities in the aquaculture sector.
In his welcome address, MPEDA Director Dr Ram Mohan M.K. highlighted the importance of enhancing tilapia production for export markets. During the inaugural session, MPEDA Chairman D. V. Swamy and Joint Secretary of the Department of Commerce Priya P. Nair jointly released the MPEDA Fact Book 2026. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on technology transfer for tilapia hatchery development was also signed between MPEDA–RGCA and the Department of Fisheries, Government of Uttarakhand, represented by C. S. Dharmshaktu. The summit featured a demonstration of tele-advisory services for aqua farmers through the Aqua Trace mobile application, including a live interaction addressing real-time farming challenges and providing expert solutions. Additionally, the Aquaculture Technician Training Portal was officially launched to strengthen skill development and promote the adoption of scientific aquaculture practices. Stakeholders expressed optimism that such initiatives will significantly boost India’s tilapia sector and enhance its competitiveness in the global market. |
