| Dhaka, Bangladesh | June 2026: The World Aquaculture Society (WAS), formally known as World Aquaculture Society, is one of the world’s leading international non-profit organizations dedicated to the advancement of aquaculture science, technology, education, and sustainable development. Since its establishment in 1969, the Society has played a vital role in promoting global cooperation, research, and innovation in aquaculture.
Founded originally as the World Mariculture Society in 1969 in the United States, the organization initially focused on marine species culture. As the aquaculture industry expanded to include freshwater and inland farming systems, the Society officially adopted the name World Aquaculture Society in 1986 to better reflect the broad scope of the sector. Today, WAS represents more than 3,000 members from nearly 100 countries, including researchers, academics, policymakers, aquaculture producers, students, and industry professionals. The primary mission of WAS is to collect and disseminate scientific and technical information, promote education and training in aquaculture, and support the sustainable production of aquatic foods to help meet the world’s growing demand for high-quality protein. To address regional needs, the Society has established several chapters, including those in the United States, Japan, Korea, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa. WAS is widely recognized for organizing major international and regional aquaculture conferences and for publishing the respected Journal of the World Aquaculture Society, a leading scientific journal in the field of aquaculture research. Among the significant milestones in the Society’s history are the organization of a major global aquaculture conference in collaboration with the European Mariculture Society in 1981, the official name change in 1986, and the establishment of the Asia-Pacific Chapter in 1996 in recognition of the region’s dominant contribution to global aquaculture production. In a notable achievement, Nutritionist Saifi Nasir was awarded Student Membership in the Asia-Pacific Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society on 20 February 2026. The membership was granted in recognition of his dedication to research and academic activities in the fields of fish nutrition and aquaculture development. As an emerging researcher with a strong interest in aquatic animal nutrition, sustainable aquaculture practices, and fisheries development, Saifi Nasir’s inclusion in the World Aquaculture Society provides an opportunity to engage with an international network of scientists, industry experts, and policymakers.
