Shrimp farming faces major problems like water quality issues (ammonia, pH, DO), diseases (White Spot, Vibriosis, Black Gill), environmental impact (mangrove loss, pollution), and high stocking density stress, leading to poor growth and high mortality. Solutions involve strict biosecurity, regular water testing, probiotics, proper aeration, healthy SPF stock, balanced feeding, and adopting sustainable practices like closed-loop systems and better waste management to ensure profitability and ecological balance.

Key Problems & Solutions:

1. Water Quality Management-

  • Problem: Fluctuations in Dissolved Oxygen (DO), pH, ammonia, and temperature cause stress and disease.
  • Solution: Maintain optimal levels through aeration, controlled water exchange, regular testing, and using chemicals like calcium carbonate to buffer pH during rains.

2. Diseases & Pathogens-

  • Problem: High density and poor water quality breed bacteria (Vibrio) and viruses (White Spot Syndrome Virus), causing mass mortality.
  • Solution: Use Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) larvae, disinfect ponds, implement strict biosecurity (quarantine, separate equipment), and use probiotics to outcompete harmful bacteria.

3. Environmental Impact:

  • Problem: Mangrove destruction, pollution from chemicals/antibiotics, and saltwater intrusion into groundwater.
  • Solution: Implement sustainable practices like closed-loop systems (water recycling), better pond lining to prevent seepage, and reducing chemical inputs.

4. High Stocking Density & Stress:

  • Problem: Overcrowding leads to poor growth, increased waste, and vulnerability to stress and disease.
  • Solution: Optimize stocking density, ensure balanced nutrition, manage feeding correctly, and maintain high water quality to reduce stress.

5. Feeding & Waste Management:

  • Problem: Uneaten feed and metabolic waste pollute ponds, increasing pathogens.
  • Solution: Use high-quality, balanced feed, feed according to shrimp needs, and employ probiotics to break down organic matter and sludge.

6. External Factors (Climate/Regulations):

  • Problem: Extreme weather (monsoon) and changing regulations (antibiotic bans) disrupt farming.
  • Solution: Prepare for heavy rains with proper drainage and pH buffers; comply with regulations by improving farm management to avoid reliance on banned chemicals.
