The Market-Oriented Agriculture Promotion Project for Smallholder Horticulture Farmers through Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships (Bangla-SHEP), implemented from August 2021, has demonstrated how market-oriented agriculture can improve smallholder farmers’ livelihoods in Bangladesh.

JICA Bangladesh and the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Ministry of Agriculture, jointly held a Result Sharing Workshop in Dhaka with government officials, development partners, financial institutions, private sector representatives, and farmers.

Through the SHEP approach — “Grow to Sell” — over 2,814 farmers, including many women, improved market access and achieved a 24% increase in horticultural income. Beyond income growth, the project fostered a major mindset shift, with farmers increasingly viewing agriculture as a business driven by market demand.

JICA remains committed to supporting Bangladesh in scaling up this successful and inclusive approach to agricultural development.
